Däischter Deeg – Minett Poesie by Fränz Hausemer

An hommage to Gaston Rollinger (1946-2024)

Poet an film pioneer from the Hiel.

Gaston Rollinger spent his entire life in the Hiel district of Esch. In this microcosm at the foot of the Katzebierg, between the French border, the old brasseur Schmelz, the ponds and the mines in Ellergronn, his approximately 40 poems in Luxembourgish were also written.

Without pathos, but not without humor, they speak in a direct, pictorial language of universal themes such as life, work, death and transience. The Hiel and the decline of the iron industry provide the setting. The musician and director Fränz Hausemer worked intensively on his work for several years and set some of his poems to music. This resulted in the very intimate music album “Däischter Deeg” (2024) and the documentary film “TERRE ROUGE-Topographie du poète”, which was selected by the Luxembourg City Film Festival in 2025.

In the historic central studio of the Metzeschmelz smelter, the sounds and images from this poetic-cinematic concert meet the steel and dust from the heyday of the Luxembourg iron industry. Chanson, jazz and cinematic sound worlds in dialogue with the spirit of the steelworks.

Terre Rouge is an intimate portrait of an elderly poet and filmmaker, who lives alone in his childhood home in Esch-sur-Alzette: Gast Rollinger (1946-2024). This place, like a refuge where time seems suspended, is located in the heart of a landscape where industrial remains and wild nature intersect. He draws all his inspiration from these places. Through this documentary, the viewer is immersed in the world of the protagonist, who shares decisive anecdotes from his childhood and his life, marked by his passion for cinema and his poetic outlook. This portrait of a singular man is interwoven with his poetry, set to music in captivating pieces by director and musician Fränz Hausemer, allowing us to capture his sensitive and profound thoughts as well as his outlook on the world.
